Jobs for Autumn and Winter

The two of us at Ilminster Garden Services have enjoyed our first 6 months of business, and our move to Ilminster in the spring has proved to be a good choice.  We love our new home in Somerset, have met so many people since we’ve been here, and are enjoying looking after their gardens!

September is the month that marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn and though some may mourn the passing of the summer, autumn is a beautiful month.  It is also a key season in the garden where any work you do will lay the foundation for next years flowers and fruit.  These autumn days find us in the garden and on the allotment, harvesting, weeding and preparing for next year’s growing season.  Some well spent time in your garden this autumn will save you time next spring. So what jobs need doing?

Give your borders a tidy up – as perennials become past their best they can be cut right down to stop the spread of disease and to keep your garden looking good over the winter.  (Leave some seed heads, rather than cutting them back, to provide food and shelter for wildlife.)  Your garden will appreciate a good mulching with organic matter - the garden’s nutrients need to be replenished.  And there’s still time to improve your lawn before the winter to give it a headstart next spring.  Perennials can be lifted and divided and shrubs and plants which are in the wrong place can be moved.  Autumn is the time to visualize your spring garden and plant accordingly.

It’s a great time for planting trees, shrubs, hedges and perennials as there is still some warmth in the earth to help them settle in before winter.  If you want new bulbs to enjoy in the spring, now is the time to plant them.  And for those of us lucky enough to have mature trees in our garden, let’s not forget the endless job of leaf raking!  Ilminster Garden Services would be happy to do any of these jobs for you, including choosing, sourcing and planting trees, shrubs, plants and climbers.

Winter is often thought of as a quiet time in the garden, when you ‘put the garden to bed’ and forget about it till spring.  However, to get the best out of your garden, there are still plenty of jobs to be done.  Remember that this is the time of year for pruning many fruit trees and shrubs – miss this out and you will not get the best quality and quantity of flowers and fruit next year.  Between now and the spring, you also need to prune your grape vines and wisteria as well as your roses.

If your garden has become a chore or you don’t have the time or energy to do these jobs yourself, Ilminster Garden Services are here to help.  Let us take the worry out of your garden!  Whether you need a one off job, or regular garden maintenance, give us a call.   We’d love to come and meet you.
